Steelmaker Ann Joo wins RM37.4 million to build a 100 MW battery project in Kedah

Ann Joo Resources, better known as a steel group, has won a RM37.4 million contract to design, engineer, procure, construct and commission a 100 MW / 400 MWh battery energy storage system at Bukit Kayu Hitam in Kedah. The job was awarded by Universal Peak Sdn Bhd.

The system is utility grid scale and forms part of the national battery storage build out that the Energy Commission is driving. Ann Joo said the contract should contribute positively to future earnings, with no change to its share capital or major shareholders.

The award is notable for who won it. A traditional steel and manufacturing group taking on a full engineering and construction battery project shows how Malaysia's grid storage push is pulling established industrial firms into a new line of work.

For the wider market, contracts like this are early evidence of a supply chain forming around grid storage, as listed companies compete to build the systems that the country's solar expansion now requires.
